![]() Good luck getting a second controller in soloqueue (it doesn't happen).Īs Viper in ranked, you're already forced to use your smoke and wall in unoptimal ways just to cover sightlines that any coordinated team would use an orb controller for. In pro play, on most maps teams that run Viper run her as a secondary controller alongside an orb controller. Maining Viper and playing primarily soloqueue is frustrating. What I'm about to say I feel like is hard to explain to most players, but hear me out: Controllers are relatively inflexible in how they can use their utility, as a role they're generally forced to play for the team and not for themselves. Controllers generally have get less ACS and are lower on the scoreboard (in my experience, in ranked this means that people are more toxic towards you and less likely to listen to anything you have to say). Controllers are extremely difficult to find impact on without a coordinated team and comms. Controllers are punished for making risky plays because if they die then their smokes die with them. There's a reason why in soloqueue no one wants to play smokes. Viper could singlehandedly apply irreplaceable map pressure on a map where defenders only have four relatively small chokepoints to watch (without a Viper on Short).īreeze is fine, but now it's the only map where Viper's unique controller style is useful enough to justify her inflexibility.Ĭontrollers are the least popular class in the game for a variety of reasons. The reason this setup was strong was because it anytime the orb+wall was up, the defenders have no information of if someone could be walking up A-Short or not and need to sacrifice utility to get info. Though Viper couldn't be run as a primary controller on Bind, her main role on attack was to gain A-Short and Lamps control for the team with the orb+wall combo that I think was made famous by Gambit, though I might be wrong. With the 50% increase in fuel drainage rate while having both the orb and wall up at the same time, this makes it much harder for anyone to walk up A-Short during the uptime of Viper's smokes. If possible, having the ability to rotate and have smokes for both sites is much better, in my opinion, than running Viper, this is the tradeoff for being able to block wider sightlines and is what, again in my opinion, kept Viper balanced. I would argue even that it is much better and more flexible to run an orb controller over Viper on Icebox now, as Viper's main weakness as a controller is her inflexibility. Due to the narrowed sightlines, any of the orb smokers (except maybe Astra?) can cover the two main sightlines, which are snowman and top of site. Having a Viper wall for an execute on Icebox B is no longer necessary for getting on site. The main issue with Icebox for Viper now is less to do with the nerfs (though they are painful) and more to do with the B-site changes (where most Vipers call home). (In my opinion the most welcome change is the viability of a mid to B push now that there are boxes that cover the site to mid sightline.) Though the changes on Icebox are mostly beneficial and make it a more functional map. She was balanced by the inflexibility of her utility and inability/difficulty in covering many common smaller sightlines that other controllers can cover with ease. The new act starting on August 24 may roll in with a new map and also an agent, teased as Sprinter. In my opinion, Viper was in a balanced spot pre-nerf and her high pick rate was primarily due to her unique ability to cover long sightlines with her wall, which is necessary on some maps and something no other controller can do. Valorant Episode 3 Act 1 started on June 22 and will run till August 24.Įpisode 3 Act 1 brought a brand new agent Kay/O to the Valorant roster but players are now demanding a new map. This slight buff will help Viper mains squeeze the full juice out of her poisonous toolkit. ![]() However, it put her at a significant disadvantage as she’d mostly lose her ultimate points and HP by activating the ultimate and dying instantly. This wasn’t necessarily a bug since this is how Viper’s ultimate generally worked before the latest patch. The agent will now be able to trigger gas from different angles and cover a large area without revealing her position. This will allow her to remain safe while initiating Viper’s Pit. After patch 3.01, the agent can use her crosshair to determine the starting point of her gas. ![]() Streamer and content creator Lothar discovered that Riot Games has quietly buffed Viper by tweaking her ultimate.
